How to Arrange Faux Greenery Stems

One of my favorite ways to bring life into my styling and home decor is to add greenery. Greenery adds so much to a room and creates a natural feeling. It’s also a great way to bring in some color!

While I would love to consistently have gorgeous stems of fresh cut greens around my home, in reality, that’s not exactly practical. Not all of my rooms have the right amount of light and trying to keep fresh greens alive can be challenging. Also, I don’t exactly have the best track record with watering plants.

So, for the most part, all the greenery you will find in my home is faux greenery. It requires so much less maintenance and always looks good! These days, faux greenery has become more and more realistic looking. Sometimes, the faux stuff even looks better than the real stuff!

Today I wanted to share some of my best tips for arranging faux greenery stems and creating gorgeous arrangements for your home.

How to Arrange Faux Greenery Stems

Pick the Right Materials

The first thing you’ll need to do is choose your materials. Arranging faux greenery is super simple. All you will need is a vase and a few stems of faux greenery.

One of my favorite places to find faux greenery stems is Michael’s. They always have a huge selection and they look great. They also have a rotating selection of vases based on the seasons.

I used two of these deep green osmanthus stems for my arrangement.

I also found this cute vase in the home decor section of Michael’s. I was able to grab this one on clearance, but unfortunately, they are no longer available.

Cut Stems to Different Heights

Before you just drop an entire stem into a vase, first stop and think about the overall look you want your arrangement to have. If you just put a single stem in a vase, you won’t get a full, realistic looking arrangement. Instead, everything will have one height and will look fake.

Start by cutting some of your stems apart to create some smaller pieces and some larger ones. By having different sizes, you can create an arrangement with variety.

I started my arrangement with a smaller, shorter piece.

Then, I added a medium sized piece with taller stems to add some height. The bulk of the arrangement is still around the base where I layered the small piece and the medium piece.

Bend & Adjust the Leaves

As you keep adding the stems into your vase, make sure to bend and adjust the leaves. When the stems come from the store, they are stiff and rigid looking. They also come with all of the leaves and branches close to the main stem.

You want your greenery to look more natural. The best way to do this is to spread out the branches of the stem and adjust the leaves as you go. This will give you a more life-like arrangement.

As I added these stems, I started to bend the arrangement to the right. I also tried to separate the leaves and make them look more realistic.

Fill it Out

Continue adding stems to your arrangement until you get a “filled out” look. You want the arrangement to feel full and substantial. To achieve this look, you may need more than one stem. Add as many pieces as you need to get the look of real greenery.

Then, you’re done! You have a gorgeous, maintenance free faux greenery arrangement. I put this arrangement together in less than 10 minutes. It was super easy to do and looks great as an accent on my nightstand.

  2. Love this Christene! I just bought a faux fiddle leaf fig stem from West Elm this weekend. I started trying it out in all my cases this morning to see which one looks best. I think your picture helped me figure out the vases I’ve tried so far aren’t hefty enough for my big branch. And I may have to go get another stem for a fuller look.

Thanks Jackie! I love the faux fiddle leaf fig stems. They look beautiful! Sometimes it takes a little playing around to see which vase is going to work best. I also like to do mock-ups in Canva or somewhere online so I can visualize how it’s going to look in different vases.

Can’t wait to see how you style it!
