DIY Whimsical Valentine’s Day Flowers

These flowers are so beautiful!!! This whole arrangement was under $15!

Flowers are my favorite things for Valentine’s Day!

They bring such a bright and cheery feeling to your home during one of the coldest winter months.

I love the look of professionally done flower arrangements, but I really don’t love the price.

If you order flower arrangements online, it’s pretty likely that what you see in the picture is not what you are going to get. If you want something big and beautiful, it’s going to cost you extra.

And don’t even get me started on the crazy shipping costs on top of the pricey flower arrangement. It’s totally not worth it!

Still, flower arrangements are beautiful seasonal decorations in your home and also make great gifts.

I’m going to show you how you can save money and make your own beautiful Valentine’s Day flower arrangement using grocery store flowers.

For my flower arrangement I used:

  • 8 Stems of Pink Roses
  • 1 Bunch Eucalyptus
  • 1 Bunch of Baby’s Breath
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Vase

My favorite place for finding flowers to create beautiful and inexpensive flower arrangements is Trader Joe’s.

They have a variety of flowers and they also have great prices. The eucalyptus bunch was $2.99, and the roses and baby’s breath bunches were each $4.99.

Most grocery stores have a floral department and you can always find a variety of different flowers and greens.

It’s important to get some different textures of flowers and greens for your arrangement to make it look larger and more interesting.

I like flower arrangements that look like a gorgeous bunch of flowers gathered from a garden or field. These types are not as symmetrical and have a whimsical quality to them.

To achieve this look, I chose flowers and greens in lighter, more muted colors.

First things first, when making a flower arrangement you need to set up a tape grid. A tape grid will help to hold your flowers in place so that the flower arrangement looks intentionally put together.

Before setting up my grid, I filled my vase with water and the plant food that came with the flowers. Next, I used tape and made a grid pattern on the mouth of the vase.

The biggest difference between a basic store-bought bouquet and a flower arrangement is the size.

Flower arrangements normally look much fuller and spread out, giving the illusion of lots of flowers and greens.

To get this fuller look, I started by placing some eucalyptus stems in the outer grid areas of the vase.

I angled them slightly so that they would give the arrangement more width.

As you can see, I didn’t make this perfectly even because I was going for a more asymmetric, hand-gathered look for my flower arrangement.

Greens are the best thing to start with when making a flower arrangement because they act as a base layer. They also take up a lot more space, giving that fuller effect we want.

Next, working towards the middle of the grid, I layered in some baby’s breath stems.

I cut these down quite a bit so that they weren’t overly tall. I wanted the buds to fill in the middle layer of my flower arrangement and provide a little bit of height over my eucalyptus leaves.

Baby’s breath is another great filler flower for an arrangement because it takes up a lot of space and adds a different texture because of the smaller bud size.

Finally, I added my pink roses. I cut these stems so that some would be the same height as the baby’s breath and others would be angled on the sides of the flower arrangement.

Because I had already set up a base layer and a middle layer of greens and texture, I didn’t need as many large flower buds to make the arrangement feel complete.

The roses stand out and look like the main aspect of the arrangement, but really they are the smallest part.

All three types of floral elements work together to create a beautiful, large, and professional-looking design.

I love how my flower arrangement turned out! It has such a light, whimsical feel while still looking full enough to be a large decoration in my home.

This beautiful arrangement cost me less than $15 to make!

I was able to get the exact design and size that I wanted at a fraction of the cost of a professional arrangement.

Now I have a great seasonal decoration sitting on my dining room table and I didn’t even have to pay that outrageous shipping fee!

I hope that you have a Happy Valentine’s Day and stay warm!

Do you love flowers as much as I do? Where do you find great flower deals?

As you know, I’m a Trader Joe’s fan but I would love to hear in the comments where you find beautiful flowers.

  1. Your bouquet is beautiful! I, too, love flowers. In the house and in the yard. I like to buy my roses at Krogers for $10 – $12 a dozen. I love splitting them up and placing them on the bathroom vanity, family room, or office. Thanks for sharing.

That’s a great idea! We don’t have a Krogers here in Pittsburgh, but I can get big bunches of roses at Costco or Trader Joe’s too! I’m totally going to use that idea!

  2. Love the addition of the eucalyptus! And that tape trick is always so helpful. Thanks for sharing with the Pretty Project Party! xoxo- Heather
